alphabetology: tell me more
Step 1: Choose a letter
How Alphabetology works
Become an
alphabetologist and
you can help your child
master the very serious
task of learning the
names and sounds of
the alphabet by
immersing yourselves in
a fun-filled, frolicking
festival of sounds.
Peggy Kaye
author of Games for
Learning series
"It's so easy and fun to work Alphabetology into our everyday
errands. After grocery shopping, we stopped for a pizza picnic
at the playground. Thanks for the ideas and memories!"
Step 4: Hand movement and letter card
Incorporate the letter sound with the hand movement and the
letter card. The hand movement provides the brain with an action
movement linked to the letter and sound. This greatly enhances
memory recall. If your child has difficulty remembering the letter
sound, simply do the hand movement. The hand movement will
be enough on its own to assist your child in remembering the
letter sound. It is amazing!
These components add kinesthetic and visual components to this
multi-sensory approach to learning.
Seamlessly work child centered activities into your day. Make it
as simple or as elaborate as you'd like.
Step 3: Choose an activity from the list of activities
Example for letter Pp:
Take your pirate or princess on a pizza picnic at the park. Play
on the playground.
Other ideas of activities from the list include: Pop popcorn, make
"Pp" with play dough or have a penny toss. You could wear
patriotic colors or purple and pink pajamas. The more fun you
have, the more memorable the letter experience will be.
Step 2: Choose 3 or more words from the word list.
For the letter Pp possibilities include "pizza, playground,
picnic, pennies." Focus on words and activities that interest
your child!
